Exadata Database Machine X2-8 - 10.08.2010
New version of the Oracle Exadata Machine: Exadata X2-8 the worlds first extreme performance and scalability platform for all your database applications including Online Transaction Processing (OLTP), Data Warehousing (DW) and consolidation of mixed workloads.
Here are the facts: Processing up to 1,000,000 I/O per second. Ease of upgrade to meet needs on any size application. Scale by connecting multiple Exadata Database Machine X2-8 racks to one another. Up to 8 racks can be connected without requiring additional switches. Larger configurations can be built with additional switches. Pre-configures system optimized for all database applications.
The X2-8 uses two 4U Sun Fire x4800 servers which each have 8 x eight-core intel CPUs (X7560) and 1 Terabyte of memory along with 14 Exadata Storage Servers. X2-8, Oracle Sun X4800.
Exadata Insights
• Storage cells have not changed much from the original V2; having 2 CPUs and 12 drives and 384G of flash cache.
• 2 Databases using a total of 128 CPU cores and 2 TB of memory for database processing
• Each Database: 64 Intel CPU cores (8 x eight-core Intel Xeon X7560 processors, 1 TB RAM)
• Newer (faster) 6 core Intel CPUs. (5670 CPUs)
• 14 Oracle Exadata Storage Servers • Storage Options: 600 GB High Performance SAS disks, or 2 TB High Capacity SAS disks
• 5.3 TB of Exadata Smart Flash Cache
• QDR (40 GB/second) Infiniband Switches • Uncompressed user data capacity of 100 TB per rack
• Uncompressed I/O bandwidth of up to 50 GB/second per rack
• Exadata Hybrid Columnar Compression often delivers 10x-15x compression ratios
• Complete redundancy for high availability
• X2-8 can be ordered, no delivery date yet
• Configured for the high end market: increased memory will allow more consolidation, larger OLTP type systems to run better; additional memory supports more concurrent users with much larger buffer caches
• Very large systems: 1000s of OLTP transactions/sec and 1000s of users will be suited by this configuration.
• Up to 25 GB/second on uncompressed raw disk bandwidth
• Upt to 50 GB/second on uncompressed FLASH data bandwidth
• Up to 50,000 Disk IOPS
• Up to 1,000,000 FLASH IOPS
• 100 TB of raw data capacity
• Up to 28 TB of uncompressed user data (ie. Estimate of space for table rows after mirroring all the disk space, allowing space to recover from disk failures, per redo logs, undo, TEMP space for data warehousing and indexing. Using Exadata Hybrid Columnar Compression the capacity will be much larger. Naturally, actual user data varies based on application)
• Data Load Rate: Up to 5 TB/hour
• Up to 25 GB/second of uncompressed raw disk bandwidth
• Full rack only
• Two database servers
• Expected Cost: hardware cost 50% more than Full Rack version with the small 2 CPU blades (i.e. X2-2).
Exadata in the Future
• More memory and more available slots for HBAs
• HBA innovation to continue • Solaris version for database servers
• Intel chip innovation to continue
• Fixed configuration

DatabaseVisions Commits to Oracle Exadata R&D - 09.07.10
DatabaseVisions is extending its support of data warehouse architectures to include the Oracle Exadata Product Family.
This summer the firm began collaborating with a nationally recognized university professor of electrical and computer engineering to bring the Oracle Exadata Product Family into the need market of the Federal Marketplace. Our next-generation design architectures are targeted toward supporting very large, high-volume mixed-media data streams.
“We seek opportunities to test our Oracle Exadata system designs on novel use-cases, such as sensor data, signal processing telemetry, video streams, and audio streams." – Eric T. Schmidt, DatabaseVisions Managing Consultant. “Right now our pipeline is approaching $1 billion for a fairly new product. I think in a few years the Exadata business will be measured in the billions of dollars per year of new sales. University Intern Program - 07.10.10
DatabaseVisions, in collaboration with Johns Hopkins University, George Mason University, and James Madison University has now allocated funding for a University Intern Program. This program supports both paid and non-paid Intern positions.
For over ten years, DatabaseVisions has experienced a 100% success rate as a Systems Integration Teaming Partner and Solution Provider. As a small business we have not heavily invested in marketing or sales of our capabilities, or product solution catalog. Rather, we have relied on business relationships at AFCEA-NOVA, The American Small Business Coalition, and our many industry partner contacts for prior sales successes.
This Fall of 2010 will be a new stage in our firm's growth. Our success in the Oracle Partner Network program enables us to leverage the Oracle Partner Network Marketing Resources to market and sell our system solutions and database tools, including Oracle Technology such as the Oracle Exadata Product Family, Oracle Data Vault, Oracle 11g, Oracle Data Mining, Oracle Business Intelligence Suite, et al.
To assist in corporate marketing and sales operations, DatabaseVisions created its University Intern, Market Analyst Program to mature corporate Marketing Capabilities in Federal Market and potentially nationwide. Partnerships at Johns Hopkins University, George Mason University, and James Madison University are enabling us to train and work with MBA, computer science, and information technology students. October 1, 2010 we expect three Market Analyst Interns to be at work, learning and developing processes to serve the Federal Marketplace with the DatabaseVisions value position. We expect this program to create four-to-eight qualified leads per month for DatabaseVisions Account Representatives to use for mutually beneficial, client interactions and possible opportunities for service. Furthermore, this program is a great opportunity for University Students to gain real-world experience, acquire Industry Training, including Oracle Technology, Sales and Marketing Certifications that can test their natural abilities and mature their thoughts as their career path progresses. We look for students to apply their academic studies with real-world projects within the Federal Market and Oracle Community. We've had strong feedback thus far, students are attracted to how our detailed University Intern Program Outline explains project tasks, expectations and rewards. ![]()
